9 Life Lessons From Being Raised by a Fitness Mom

Pushing yourself physically has many parallels to pushing yourself in life. My mom is a fitness trainer and always kicks me in the butt to get in shape, get out there, and get what I want. Naturally, her training spilled over to her parenting and it has shaped the way I approach life:

1. You can always go harder, better, faster, stronger.
Fitness and athletics are goal-oriented activities. You’ve reached a personal record? Now try to beat that. You lifted 50 lbs? Now try to lift 55 lbs. Even if you shed one second of your time or lift one more pound, there is no goal too big or too small. More importantly, there is always room for improvement. Don’t stay stagnant.

2. Complain all you want, there are no excuses.
From grades to competitions to my career, my mom always told me to work as if failure was not an option. It’s an old cliche, but you should not go into something choosing to fail. There’s a difference between knowing that you may not succeed and thinking that you won’t.

3. You have to earn it.
On that note, you should try to work for the things you want. In terms of fitness, my mom always says you earn your body. You earn that drink of water after sweating for it. You earn that medal after putting in the hours of practice. Likewise, you should earn that job. Earn that trip. Earn that house. It’s much better when you work for it yourself.

4. Let your results speak for themselves.
My mom doesn’t boast about her knowledge, her muscles or her race times. Of course, if people ask her, she’ll share. There is no need to post selfies or show off if you’re truly doing something for yourself. Let your hard work humbly speak for itself.


5. Your health should be a priority.
I seriously want to be as fit and nimble as my mom when I’m her age (she’s 51). And I realize that I should take care of my health now. My mom makes healthy eating choices, but she can still have her cake and it too. Just not all at once. It’s all about moderation, not deprivation. As with any habit change in life, you have to do it progressively.


6. There is no such thing as a late start.
My mom started out as an accountant, but later pursued her passion for fitness when I was in school. Seeing her do physical feats at her age and transform clients of all walks of life, it all goes to show that we can start changing our lives at any time and any point.


7. But you should finish what you start.
My mom always said to never start anything unless you’re willing to finish it. That also means striving to know what you want as much as possible. Commit to crossing that finish line no matter how much pain you endure. It’s always worth it in the end and you come out that much stronger.


8. Make up for what you lost.
Sometimes my mom skips a day of cardio or weight lifting. Life happens. But she always manages to make up for the lost time. She’ll either do double the miles or hold off on that cake. There’s always a way to make up for your shortcomings.


9. Consistency is key.
To get in shape or reach any of your life goals, all it takes is consistency. Stick to your routine, exercise every part of your body (and being) equally, and make sure everything else in your life is aligned with your goals as much as possible. Everything should be cohesive.

While being fit and healthy has its physical benefits, it subsequently affects the other aspects of your life. Sometimes we need to do something with more tangible results to remind us that we can get the same results for those more intangible things. After all, how you do anything is how you do everything.
